Preparation

While scholarships/bursaries run year round, each has an individual deadline! It is never too early to prepare, as a typical award winner demonstrates, over time, that they are involved in activities within the school and/or community and are well-rounded citizens. Some scholarships/bursaries have a specific requirement (ie. financial need), but many will include criteria, as listed below:

Suggestions to help you prepare:

  • Review Common Mistakes When Applying to Scholarships.
  • Create a scholarship-specific email address.
  • Update your resume.
  • Volunteer and/or take on leadership roles in the school and/or community.
  • Build authentic relationships with your community connections and teachers at school, as some scholarships require a recommendation letter from a teacher and/or community supervisor.
  • Attend scholarship workshops.

Awards offered by post-secondary institutions to graduating students across Ontario

These scholarships require an application submission to the AHS Scholarship Committee by the posted deadline. The AHS Scholarship Committee will review timely applications and will select candidates (as allowed) to nominate for consideration to the providing scholarship committee. Nominated students will complete a selection process with the providing scholarship committee which considers nominated candidates throughout Ontario.

Lester B. Pearson International Student Scholarships and U of T Centre for International Experience

37 scholarships for international students who are nominated for the most prestigious and competitive scholarship available to international students at the University of Toronto. The scholarship covers tuition, books, incidental fees, and residence for four years and is tenable only at the U of T for first-year entry, undergraduate programs.

  • November 8, 2024: Deadline to complete the Lester B. Pearson application sent to you if nominated by your school and application received by the university deadline.

Eligibility: 

  • An international student (i.e. on a study permit)
  • Enrollment in final year of secondary school
  • Beginning study at U of T in Sept. 2025
  • Nomination from your school, based on academic achievement, creativity, leadership, and potential future global contributions

Queen's University Chancellor Scholarship

Scholarships awarded to students, based on detailed applications and a nomination from their school. Winners are awarded $12,000 in the first year and is renewable for 3 more years, if a GPA of 3.5 is maintained in a full course load in each year ($48,000.00 total)

  • November 15, 2024:  The nominee(s) is notified their name is being forwarded to Queen’s University
  • November 20, 2024: Deadline for selected nominee to apply for admissions to Queen’s University through OUAC
  • December 8, 2024: Deadline for the selected nominee to submit their MAA application through Queen’s SOLUS

Eligibility: 

  • Superior academic achievement:90%+ average
  • Creative and original thinking
  • Proven leadership qualities
  • Beginning study at Queen’s in Sept. 2025
  • School nomination required from an institution where the student is enrolled in full-time studies

Schulich Leader Scholarships

100 scholarships awarded to entrepreneurial minded high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math program at 20 partner universities across Canada. Half are valued at $120,000 for engineering scholarships and half are valued at $100,000* for Science and Math scholarships.

  • January 24, 2025: Nominee informed of their nomination
  • January 29, 2025: Deadline for the Designated High School Official to forward the nominee’s name
  • February 19, 2025: Deadline for nominee to submit their application, as directed by the Schulich Leader Committee
  • March 7-June 16, 2025: Winners notified by the Schulich Leader Scholarships Committee

Eligibility:

  • High school graduate in 2024-2025 school year
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Enrolling in an eligible STEM program
  • Planning a career in the eligible fields
  • Academic excellence, leadership, charisma, creativity and entrepreneurial mindset
  • Strong consideration given to financial need

Western University National Scholarships:

National Scholarships recognize all-round excellence and are awarded on a combination of outstanding academic performance, creative and innovative thought, a passion for the pursuit of learning and the exceptional achievement in extracurricular activities such as the arts and athletics. A special emphasis is placed on a candidate's commitment to community service through ongoing contributions to school and community life.

  1. “Nomination”, enter the Designated High School Official email (elisa.welch@yrdsb.ca)
  2. “Assessor”, enter a staff member’s email who is familiar with your academic & extra- curricular performance & agrees to be your referee.
  • February 14, 2025: Western’s deadline for the application and the Designated Official and the Assessor’s responses
  • Late  March: Students notified if they will be interviewed
  • End of April/Early May: Scholarship offers will be made

Eligibility: 

  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident, except International President’s Entrance and President’s Entrance for Black Students
  • OUAC application to full time, main campus
  • Beryl Ivey and Neen Hodgins Scholarships require a supplementary application
  • Average of 90%+ in all grade 12 U/M courses
  • Creative and innovative thought

  • Exceptional achievement in extracurriculars

Schulich Builders Scholarships for Skilled Trades: 120 scholarships for skilled trade programs at 12 Ontario colleges. Each college awards 10; 5 at $20,000 for 1-year certificate and 5 at $40,000 for 2-year diploma programs:

  5. Durham College
  6. Fanshawe College
  7. George Brown College
  8. Georgian College
  9. Humber Polytechnic
  10. Loyalist College
  11. Mohawk College

  • May 1, 2025: Deadline for the Designated High School Official to forward the nominee names
  • Various deadlines to apply to each college: AHS nominees will submit their online application to the college, according to the college deadline. Click on the Schulich Builders Scholarships webpage to access the individual college information and application
  • July 31, 2025: Colleges will notify the scholarship winners

The scholarship application must include:

  • One letter of recommendation
  • An essay outlining why you should be considered
  • A headshot photo (not needed for AHS application)

  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Meets college admission requirements
  • Enrolled in an eligible, full-time skilled trades 1-year certificate or 2-year diploma program

Additional Selection Criteria:

  • Strong work ethic and character
  • Democratic ideals & respectful of all people
  • Dedicated to the skilled trades
  • Financial need
  • An essay on why you should receive award
  • Includes a letter of recommendation from:
  1. A high school staff member
  2. An employer
  3. A community organization supervisor

 

Awards offered by the YRDSB and private donors, which are specific to graduating AHS students.

  • Department Awards: Subject-specific awards, as selected by the individual departments at AHS.
  • AHS Graduation Awards - Various scholarships requiring a submitted application to the AHS Scholarship Committee by the posted deadline. The AHS Scholarship Committee will review timely applications and will select the most deserving winner, based on submitted applications and the award criteria.

 

Awards offered by post-secondary institutions to their students through the Finance Department:

  • Entrance Scholarships – usually based on marks, without application, offered upon admission;
  • Faculty & Presidential Scholarships – most often an application is required with specific criteria;
  • In-course Scholarships  consult the Student Services Department/Financial Aid Office of your post-secondary institution.
